Repair or Replace
Is It Worth Repairing a Monitor?
Often it is, especially when the fault is in the power board or backlight. These parts fail with age and heat, while the panel itself stays healthy. A good quality monitor can keep working well after that kind of repair.
On the other hand, a cracked or physically damaged panel is usually not economic to fix. The panel is the most expensive part of any monitor. In that case, we tell you honestly that a replacement makes more sense.
When Repair Makes Sense
- The monitor has no power or no backlight
- The screen glass has no cracks or pressure marks
- You own a quality, gaming or colour accurate model
- The monitor suits your setup and you would rather keep it
When Replacement May Be Better
- The panel has a crack, spreading ink stain or heavy lines
- Parts are no longer available for the model
- The monitor lacks the ports your new computer needs
Laptops follow a similar rule. If a laptop screen has a crack, see our page on cracked laptop screen repair in Melbourne, because laptop panels are often easier to replace.
Why Should You Never Open a Monitor Yourself?
Please do not open a monitor case, even when it is unplugged. The power supply inside contains capacitors that can hold a dangerous electrical charge. That charge can remain for a long time after you switch off the power.
In addition, the panel and its thin ribbon cables break very easily. Plastic clips can snap, and one slip can crack the glass. A repairable fault can then turn into a monitor that nobody can fix.
If the monitor smells of burning, makes loud pops or shows smoke, unplug it at the wall straight away. Then keep it switched off until a technician checks it.
